I Know How I Want My Hair to Look—But What Do I Actually Book?

You know what you want your hair to look like.
Maybe you have a photo saved.
Maybe you know you want to be brighter around your face, softer at the root, less warm, more dimensional, shorter, fuller, or simply more like yourself again.
And then you open a salon booking menu.
Suddenly, you're being asked to choose between services and terminology you may not completely understand.
Highlights? Dimensional color? Color refresh? Gray blending? Gloss? Haircut? Consultation?
This is where a lot of people get stuck.
But there’s an important distinction:
You need to understand what you want from your hair. You do not need to know exactly how a stylist should create it.
That’s our job.
Start With the Outcome, Not the Technique
Clients often try to solve their booking problem by identifying a technique.
They'll say:
“I think I need highlights.”
But what they may actually mean is:
“I want my hair to feel brighter.”
Those aren't necessarily the same thing.
Someone asking for highlights might want:
more brightness around the face
softer gray
more dimension
a lighter overall appearance
less contrast between their roots and ends
or simply something that feels different
The technique comes after we understand the goal.
So instead of asking yourself:
What technique do I need?
Start with:
What do I want to be different about my hair?
That question is much more useful.
First: Is This a Smaller Adjustment or a Larger Appointment?
One of the easiest ways to narrow down your booking choice is to think about the size of the change.
Your overall look still works—you just want something refreshed.
Maybe:
your color has softened
your tone feels dull or too warm
your roots need attention
you want some brightness brought back
one part of your hair feels ready for attention
You may be looking for one of our refresh services.
These appointments are designed to address what has changed without unnecessarily rebuilding everything.
You want the overall look created, significantly changed, or fully reworked.
Maybe:
you're a new haircut guest
your haircut needs to be reshaped
you want considerably more or less length
you're making a larger color change
you want substantially more brightness or dimension
your current color no longer reflects what you want
you're ready for a different direction
Start with one of our full hair services.
These appointments reserve enough time to work with the larger picture rather than trying to squeeze a significant change into a smaller maintenance appointment.
What If the Look Is Fine, but Your Hair Doesn't Feel Fine?
This is a different decision.
You may actually like your color and haircut but notice that your hair itself has become:
dry
frizzy
difficult to manage
dull
compromised
heavy with buildup
Or perhaps your scalp is what needs attention.
In that case, changing your entire look may not make sense.
A Hair Ritual or Treatment allows us to address condition, texture, manageability, strength, or scalp needs without unnecessarily changing your haircut or color.
This distinction matters.
Not every hair problem is a haircut or color problem.
Use Your Hair Lifecycle as Another Clue
Your hair doesn't change everywhere at the same rate.
After an appointment, your roots grow.
Color gradually softens.
Your haircut grows and redistributes weight.
Humidity, styling, environmental exposure, washing, heat, and your hair's individual characteristics can change how it feels and behaves.
Here in the Pacific Northwest, moisture in the air can also make changes in texture and manageability especially noticeable.
That means the question isn't simply:
“How many weeks has it been since my appointment?”
A more useful question is:
“What has actually changed?”
If most of your hair still feels right, you may only need attention in one area.
If several parts of the look have changed together—or you simply don't want the same look anymore—a larger appointment may make more sense.
That is the thinking behind our Hair Lifecycle: learning to recognize what your hair is doing rather than automatically booking according to a calendar.
What About Inspiration Photos?
Bring them.
You do not need to know the terminology behind a photo for it to be useful.
Inspiration photos can help us understand things like:
how light or dark you want to feel
where you like brightness
how much dimension you prefer
the amount of contrast you like
the shape or movement you're drawn to
how polished, soft, textured, or natural you want the finished result to feel
But a photo is a reference point, not a service prescription.
The person in the photo may have a completely different natural color, density, texture, haircut, gray pattern, or color history than you do.
So rather than trying to determine exactly what service created the photograph, show us what you're responding to in it.
Even saying:
“I don't know what this is called. I just like how soft the color looks.”
is useful information.
Your Hair History Matters Too
What you want tells us where you're trying to go.
Your hair history helps determine how we can get there.
Previous permanent color, highlights, lightener, box color, gray coverage, corrective work, chemical services, and even color that appears to have “grown out” can affect what is possible in your next appointment.
That's especially important when you're asking for a significant color change.
You aren't expected to evaluate that yourself.
Just give us an accurate picture of what has been done to your hair.
We'll use that information to determine the safest and most realistic path forward.
When Should You Book a Consultation?
Sometimes the starting point genuinely isn't obvious.
A consultation may make sense when:
you're considering a major transformation
you have significant previous color history
you're transitioning away from regular gray coverage
you're considering a substantial lightening process
you aren't sure whether your goal is achievable in one appointment
you're deciding between very different directions
or you simply need professional input before committing to a service
A consultation isn't something you need before every appointment.
It's there for the moments when making the plan is part of the service you need.
You Don't Have to Book Perfectly
Our service menu is designed to give us the right starting point and amount of time for your appointment.
It isn't a test of how well you understand professional hair terminology.
Start with what most closely matches what you want right now.
When you arrive, your stylist will take the time to understand your hair, what you're noticing, what you want from it, how you realistically maintain it, and what your hair can support.
Then we refine the plan together.
You bring the direction. We bring the professional judgment required to translate it into your hair.
